The CNC Turning process involves securing the raw material and turning it on the lathe while a single point cutting tool moves parallel to the axis of rotation, shaping the material. CAD software is used to feed precise measurements into a machine.
After reading the instructions, the computer controls the lathe to ensure that the parts are manufactured to the exact specifications required. This differs from traditional machining in that the work station, rather than the cutting tool, rotes.
CNC turning is typically used to make more cylindrical or oblong shaped components due to how they operate. The technique is also preferred over CNC milling and 3D printing due to its ability to quickly produce multiples of the same component from a single piece of raw material.
